Coming Right Up — Melges 17 U.S. National Championship, August 28-30

Hosted by the Glen Lake Yacht Club (GLYC), the 2009 Melges 17 U.S. National Championship will take place on August 28-30. This is the event of the year for the fleet and where speed meets fun on the Melges 17. Regatta Chairman Brad Sprouse along with his wife Jandy and their team at GLYC are ready to welcome as many as thirty teams. An exciting social agenda is scheduled and some of the best racing in the Midwest. Be there!

2009 W.M.Y.A. Regatta Happens August 6-9 On Torch Lake, MI

The Torch Lake Yacht Club is hosting the 80th Annual Western Michigan Yachting Association Championship on August 6-9 2009. The Melges 17 will be among several very cool Melges fleets racing for one of the Midwest’s most popular regattas. So far, seven teams are signed up including Rob Terry, Mary Anne Ward, Charleston champion Jim Hilgard and Blue Water Champ Mike Dow. View a Current List Of Entries

Derek Packard Crowned 2009 Melges 17 I.L.Y.A Champion

Congratulations to Derek Packard for taking first place at the third Melges 17 I.L.Y.A. Championship held on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Over the course of the championship, six races were conducted with 19 participating teams. Packard played the heavy breeze and challenging conditions to finish first overall only one point ahead of second place finisher Erik Bowers. Vincent Porter was third. View Full Results

The class would like to thank all the participants and most especially Regatta Chair Hans Dickel as he worked very hard to make this championship the very best. With the support of the Minnetonka Yacht Club, this was by far the best Inland ever!

Mike Dow Tops The Blue Water Regatta

Congratulations to Mike Dow, 2009 Blue Water Champion! During the month of June, Dow won this legendary regatta hosted by the Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Michigan. From start to finish, Dow took the lead ahead of ten other teams. On the final day he clinched the win. His biggest competition came from second place finisher Sean Fidler and in third, was 2009 Midwinter Champion Lesa Guntenkunst. View Final Results

Vincent Porter Wins Spring Championship In Lake Geneva

The Melges 17 Spring Championship hosted by the Lake Geneva Yacht Club is a highly coveted event for the class and always hotly contested. This year, twenty Melges 17s were on the line with Lake Geneva’s own Vincent Porter taking top honors. 2009 has been a banner year for Porter in the Melges 17 fleet. The same can be said for second overall Jim Hilgard. Tom Munroe was third.

The Melges 17 — A Junior Over Achiever

Over the summer months, the Melges 17 showed its speedy side to junior sailors at two unique training clinics in Wisconsin and Michigan. Junior sailors love the Melges 17. It’s fun, fast and really easy to sail, not to mention offers competitive racing unlike any other scow.

Special thanks to Brian McMurray, Mary Anne Ward and photographer Liz McNeil Gill for sharing the Michigan experience with the class. This Michigan Youth Clinic Photo Gallery speaks louder than words. Held during the blazing hot summer month of July, the kids were able to cool down with a spin on the Melges 17. The training clinic was a great way for the kids to learn more about the Melges 17 Class and sharpen their sailing skills. Read The Full Article

The Pewaukee Yacht Club hosted an entry level clinic to get people excited about the Melges 17. It all started with an on-land demo featuring the best ways to hoist and douse the Melges 17's baby asymmetrical spinnaker — the ultimate key to keeping momentum and winning! The 2009 Melges 17 Ranking Championship is on the home stretch with only a few regattas left and 70 points separating first and second place. The spread is wide as Charleston Easter Regatta Champion Jim Hilgard is seated in first, Midwinter Champ Lesa Gutenkunst is second and in third is Spring Champion Vincent Porter.
